Character Background

• History: wiki link
• Core Relationships:
SHIGEO
The titular "Mob" is Ritsu's older brother and easily his most important person. He would do anything to protect Shigeo, while also trusting that the reverse is true as well. They haven't always been so close: growing up, Ritsu was scared of Shigeo's esper powers and found it hard to connect to him through that fear, and he also didn't really respect his older brother as someone to look up to, since Shigeo was kind of inept and a slacker. But now he has his own powers and Shigeo has improved his physical and social skills they're on a more equal footing.

THE STUDENT COUNCIL
Ritsu is a member. We only really see his relationship with the president, Shinji Kamuro, who is also in a complicated and envious relationship with his older brother. Ritsu respects and obeys Shinji's authority as an older student and the council prez, but also finds him slimy and disgusting when he uses underhanded tactics to shore up the SC's reputation among the student body and oust troublemakers. When they have a big disagreement Ritsu even calls him trash. However once Shinji cleans his act up and stops framing other students Ritsu seems to go back to treating him with regular respect.

THE AWAKENING LAB
Run by esper enthusist Kenji Mitsuura. There are five espers in training here that Ritsu befriends when they are kidnapped together; we don't get to know them very individually but it's shown that he keeps in contact with them and they all seem friendly together.

REIGEN
Ritsu doesn't like this guy. He's shady and immature and doesn't have Shigeo's best interests at heart. And yet... somehow, Reigen hiring Shigeo was what inspired his brother to start working to better himself, which Ritsu finds very touching. And he doesn't really think Reigen is a bad guy, and they've faced danger together enough times that he would consider him an ally. But he still kind of treats Reigen like a little kid who is misbehaving, absolutely no respect.

SHOU
Ritsu's enemy-turned-ally, Shou came to Ritsu's family home to warn him of impending danger, allowing him to get his parents out of harms way and fake his family's deaths. He finds Shou pushy, arrogant, cocky, overpowered, and generally annoying, and yet also seems to like him a lot. They work well together and seem to understand each other, especially since Shou's fear of his father's power echoed the anxiety Ritsu once felt towards his brother Shigeo.

TERU
Also Ritsu's ally. He fought Mob, lost, and immediately befriended him instead. When Ritsu was losing his shit it's Teru who kept an eye on him and told Shigeo when he was in trouble - conversely when Ritsu thinks they should go get help the first person he thinks of is Teru. When not in life or death situations they seem to have a casually friendly relationship, such as when they enjoy onsen time together, though he thinks of Teru more as "my brother's friend" than his own.

KAGEYAMA PARENTS
Not a lot is shown about these guys. They are a fairly ordinary mum and dad who treat both their kids well and support them and cheer them on. Ritsu's father is a hard worker who he sees as reliable, and his mother is a good cook and though she worries a little it's only ever with affection. Still, even with only a minor role in the canon, they're really important to Ritsu, who is still only thirteen and values his family an enormous amount. He seems to have fairly traditional Japanese values when it comes to respecting his parents and also makes sure they aren't involved in any of the supernatural battling stuff.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

Ritsu is responsible and charismatic, which is why we see him enjoying team activities. He is a member of the student council (fairly prestigious in Japanese schools for a junior) and also enjoys sports. Shigeo also often talks about how he is popular with others, extroverted, tends to be a lot more capable of public speaking and putting himself forward, and so on. Before his abilities manifest it is clear he is seen as a role model and adults approve of him.

Ritsu feels a lot of peer pressure. We see this in Season 1, when his Student Council President pushes him to frame a delinquent student in order to get them kicked out, which in turn increases the Student Councils goals of lawfulness and good behaviour. He is willing to do what is necessary for the greater good.

However he also has such a strong sense of justice that the guilt of lying about this triggers his psychic powers to manifest.

Ritsu has some mild trauma around powers, particularly his brother's. When they were both very young, Shigeo lost control and hurt Ritsu accidentally. Ritsu claims not to remember this well or be affected by it, but it's clear later he was lying to spare Shigeo's feelings, and was actually deeply affected. He tells Shigeo later that from then on he was always at least a little bit afraid of Shigeo losing control; this meant they couldn't just fight like regular brothers.

In addition, Shigeo's huge psychic power overshadowed him and made him feel insecure, which is why he became such a model student in school, and also why his popularity and high marks don't mean so much to him. Ritsu thinks he would much rather have psychic powers, so when he manifests as an esper he leans into it really hard.

Filled with determination to be stronger, he trains hard and also puts himself in situations where he will experience high levels of the awful emotions that awakened him in the first place. This means he continues to support the Student Council's regime, feeling guiltier and guiltier as he sees the way his actions are ruining other student's lives. He begins to lie more and more, including letting a psychic research facility called "The Awakening Lab" think he is his brother and test him, so he can learn more about improving his powers. We can see that he really works hard to achieve his goals, even though it puts him under a lot of mental stress.

The entire Awakening Lab is kidnapped and Ritsu immediately shows his charisma and leadership by bonding with the other kids he had sort of looked down upon as weak previously. He encourages them to stick together and comes up with clever uses for their powers so they can try and escape from Claw, the organization that kidnapped them.

Eventually everything comes to a head and Shigeo finds out about his brother's new powers and the anger and trauma and angst he's feeling about everything. However Shigeo still really admires his cool and capable younger brother, and instantly forgives him, which makes Ritsu realize how stupid he was being. From then on they boost each other up and work together.

However Ritsu isn't quite as automatically kindhearted and naive as his big brother. Many people are drawn to Mob due to his pure open-hearted nature, and often it is down to the more worldly and cynical Ritsu to evaluate them, such as the way he treats Reigen when he thinks Reigen is taking advantage of Mob. Ritsu also looks out for his brother in other ways, encouraging him to train for a marathon and ask out the girl he likes (and sparing his feelings when he hears the girl likes someone else.) He will also try and beat up anyone who bullies his brother.

Finally, he's a fairly standard middle class thirteen year old Japanese boy. He can get a little flustered around mature topics, he thinks it's important to respect your elders and defer to authority, he wears his uniform and otherwise very basic comfortable neat outfits, he enjoys big meals and hot baths and playing games. He doesn't really care about music but he enjoys character drama tv shows and watching sport. Aside from the esper drama he has had a pretty privileged life and he has the health and resilience and education that reflects that.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Ritsu is an "esper" with psychic abilities. It took a long time for them to manifest, and once they did he trained hard to access their potential. They mostly only manifest as telekinesis, though they are increasing in strength as he uses them more (from bending spoons when they manifested to lifting and slamming entire cars.) He can also create a weak shield.

Like his brother, Ritsu is also capable of going "all out" when some unknown metric reaches its "100%", and gaining enormous world-smashing psychic power, but: a) his canonpoint is going to be from before that ever happened, and b) it only triggers when Mob loses control in order to try and save his brother, and is possibly even due to Mob's ability to share out his psychic abilities. It's not something I would use in Deer unless it was part of a planned plot or event, such as Mob losing control or a Beasthood rampage.

• Blood Type: Warmblood.
• Omen: A little axolotl. Kinda like this.
• Blessed Day: July 2nd (canon bday)
• Patron Pthumerian: The Reckoning
• Blood Power Manifestation: None he's warmblooded.
